Japan’s ruling coalition lost its majority in Sunday’s election, causing political instability.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s snap election backfired, as voters reacted against inflation and a funding scandal.

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Komeito coalition, which previously held 279 seats, will now fall short of a majority in the 465-seat parliament. Meanwhile, the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ) increased its seats to over 130.

The LDP could still stay in power by forming a minority government or seeking new coalition partners.
