Bolt Arrives in Malaysia
The Estonian company will be competing with local giants Grab and AirAsia.
Bolt has officially entered Malaysia’s ride-hailing market, taking on Grab and AirAsia Ride. The Estonian company, founded in 2013 and already operating in 45 countries, has started with just its basic ride-hailing service here.
While it doesn’t offer the full range of options like Grab, Bolt is trying to attract new users with some solid discounts.
In terms of pricing, Bolt rides can be a bit pricier. For instance, a 16km ride from GMBB to Bukit Jalil National Stadium costs around RM31 with Bolt, compared to RM19.30 on Grab’s “JustGrab.”
But Bolt is currently offering 50% off for first-time riders across Malaysia on their first seven rides (up to RM15 off each ride) until November 16. For those in the Klang Valley, the discount extends to 20 rides, available through November 14.
Compared to Bolt, Grab’s platform offers more variety, like luxury car options, metered taxis, and additional perks.
Features like “Quiet Ride” and “Ride Cover” add value, while the “Carbon Neutral Fee” supports green initiatives. Grab also covers more ground with grocery delivery, an e-wallet, and other services in Malaysia.
For now, Bolt is keeping it simple with just ride-hailing, but it’s worth watching to see if they roll out more services as they settle into the market.
